Five Post-Baby Exercise Tips
Congratulations! You’ve welcomed your beautiful, bouncing bundle of joy. After the new motherhood fog begins to wear off you’re probably yearning for a little “me time” and may want to get back into your workout routine. We’re here to help you settle back in, but before you do, check out our post-baby exercise tips.
Get cleared for exercise. Even if you are anxious to get back into your routine, make sure that your doctor or midwife has cleared you for physical activity before you jump right in. Ask about exercise at your six-week postpartum checkup. Chances are good that you will get the okay, but certain postpartum conditions may result in your care provider recommending you wait a bit longer before getting back to the gym.
Start slowly. Even if you were working out every single day during your pregnancy, that does not mean that your body is ready to jump right back in where you left off. Your body has been through a lot. Between the birth itself, breastfeeding and sleep deprivation, a lot has changed for you. Be kind to yourself and don’t expect to be running marathons your first week back in the gym. Start with some low-impact cardio and add some light weight training. As you feel your strength returning, add more variety and intensity.
Don’t get discouraged. It took nine months for you to gain weight during your pregnancy, so it is unrealistic to expect it to come off right away. Take your time and enjoy the journey as you learn to appreciate your new body.
Find a class you love. With everything that comes along with having a new baby at home, it can be difficult to plan all of your own workouts on top of everything else.
