Some gyms advertise low prices and tons of perks, but they don’t tell you that those perks only come with a higher-priced membership. Make sure to ask about these extra costs so that you know exactly what you’ll be getting with your membership!

1) Is there an enrollment fee?

Some gyms charge a sizable enrollment fee or a yearly membership fee. You should make sure you are aware of all the fees before you sign a contract. If a gym charges an enrollment fee, you may lose a large sum if you decide later that the gym does not meet your needs. An enrollment fee might also mean that the gym is more interested in getting your money than in keeping you as a customer.

2) What kind of memberships does the gym offer?

If you have to sign a contract, then the gym only needs to gain your business once. After that, they will get your dues each month even if they don’t meet all your expectations. Consider gyms that offer month-to-month memberships so that they have to earn your business each month! Month-to-month memberships also make it easier for you to end your membership if you decide the facility does not meet your needs.

3) Does the gym offer childcare? Is it free?

If you have children, chances are that you will need to bring them to the gym with you sometimes. A gym that offers childcare will make it easier to stick to your fitness routine. Don’t assume that this service will be free. Ask if there is a fee for childcare and what that fee is. If childcare is included in your monthly membership price, then you will be more likely to use the service, and more likely to go to the gym even when your children need to come along.

4) Are special events and classes included in the membership price?

You looked at the classes and the class schedule, now ask if there is an extra charge for attending those classes. If classes are free, you can try them all without feeling like you’re wasting money. You will be more likely to work out if you can go to classes that you prefer. You may also find it easier to stick to your fitness routine if you attend classes because you will know that other people will notice if you’re gone.

5) What are the hours?

Life can be hectic. You don’t want to join a gym and then miss workouts because the facility isn’t open at hours that are convenient for you. 360° Fitness is open 24/7 so you will always be able to fit in a workout, no matter what your schedule looks like. Having access 24/7 will also help you meet your goals because you can still workout on days that your schedule changes unexpectedly–you might miss your favorite class, but you can get in some late-night hours on the fitness equipment.

When considering a gym, think about the total cost, and not just the monthly fee. If extra perks are included, a gym with a slightly higher monthly fee might actually be cheaper in the long run. Also keep the quality of the facility and the competency of its staff in mind when looking at the price. When it comes to your health and well-being, a little extra money is probably well spent if the gym has trainers and staff with an educational background in a field related to health and fitness.
