When most people consider a workout routine, they think of three major areas: lower body, back/arms, and abs. While this is a good place to start, it does not include all of the major muscles in your body. One of the easily forgotten areas that people tend to look over is the neck. Many people experience neck pain, which they attribute to poor sleeping habits or overworking other muscles. In reality, the neck has muscles just like every other part of your body, and they can be weak too.

Benefits to Exercising Your Neck

There are many reasons to include a few neck exercises into your weekly routine.  These benefits include:

 

  1. Strengthening. Exercising this area affects the neck, upper back, and shoulders. These muscles are all connected and working each is important to maintaining a healthy system.
  2. Flexibility. Stretching exercises make the neck more flexible and increase your range of motion.
  3. Pain reduction. One of the easiest ways to reduce neck pain is to exercise it. Light exercises can reduce inflammation and lead to stronger muscles, which are more resistant to fatigue and pain.

How to Exercise Your Neck

Exercising your neck does not include typical exercise like cardio on a treadmill or lifting free weights. Although there are special machines that strengthen the neck, the average person does not need to use them. Simple exercises, such as stretching, are often plenty to keep your neck limber and free of injury. As always, you should consult a medical professional before embarking on any fitness program. This is especially important with neck exercises, and doubly so with a history of injury. A quick 10-15 minute stretching and exercise session can radically change the amount of neck pain you experience and help recover from an accident.
